Known as the biggest little town in Australia, Mullumbimby is a small town with a rich cultural and historical background, located in the Byron Shire, known for its laid-back atmosphere and connection to nature. Originally inhabited by the Bundjalung people, the area was later settled by European pioneers in the 19th century, who began cedar logging and farming. The town became a hub for agriculture, particularly bananas and dairy.
In the 1970s, Mullumbimby attracted a wave of alternative lifestyle seekers and became a centre for the counterculture movement. Today, it maintains its eclectic, community-driven spirit, blending history with a focus on sustainability, creativity, and connection to the natural environment. Visitors will find a strong sense of local pride, organic markets, and a vibrant music and arts scene.
The locals lovingly refer to Mullum as the heart of the Byron Bay Shire.
